Testing the Pocket Wizard Plus III

The new Pocket Wizard Plus III just arrived at my studio. I JUST had to test this new radio transmitter every way I could think of.

The Plus III worked perfectly in the studio, firing both Speedlights and studio strobes. My next question was how far would the signal transmit from a remote location? Would it work outside the studio?

My assistant Keiko went to the front door of the studio, across the street and fired it . Eureka!!! both the strobe and camera fired inside the studio. I then proceeded out the back door of the studio, stood in the middle of the street and fired the strobe and camera inside the studio. This is approximately 450″ away through 3 brick walls. The final test of the afternoon was walking the length of the alley behind the studio, about 600′ and firing the the camera and strobe, which were still inside the studio.

The Results:

New soon to be released Pocket Wizard Plus III….. It just works every time, firing both the strobes and the camera.

Dealing with reflections

On a recent assignment for Nike I ran into the challenge of how deal with reflections on a large glass display case. The showcase was located in the front of the store near glass doors and could not be moved. I also encountered the issue of massive reflections from the front widows. I attempted to use a polarizing filter, which is sometimes the answer to reducing reflections, but the reflections were coming from several different angles.

The Solution: A large black back drop placed between the display case and the windows. The black paper eliminates the reflections. Next all I needed to do was cut a small hole in the backdrop to put the camera through.

I had one of those day that when the photo gods just smiled at me.

I had the honor of photographing Chuck Berry, Leonard Cohen, Keith Richards, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon, Salmon Rushdie, Peter Wolf, Shawn Colvin, Tom Perrotta, Bill Flanigan and Caroline Kennedy at John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, MA on February 26, 2012. Chuck Berry and Leonard Cohen were the first two recipients of PEN New England’s Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. I do have one of the best jobs in the world!

Rick Friedman Location Lighting Workshop 2012

The 1st Location Lighting workshop of 2012 was this past weekend at Unique Photo in Fiarfield, NJ. Thank you to everyone who attended and thanks to Unique for hosting the event. The below is our group photo from this workshop.

SF & LA Workshops

Just returned from San Francisco and LA where I taught two fantastic “Location Lighting Workshops” at the Calumet stores. We went from Speedlights to Dynalites. We used Rogue Flashbenders & Grids, Chimera beauty dishes, softboxes and Window Patterns, PocketWizards, Rosco gels, Cinefoil & Tough Spun, PNY cards, California Sunbounce reflectors and Calumet lightstands and grip equipment.
